Ref. 22/480. A pair of embroidered rank badges. Qing dynasty. The fifth civil rank Silver Pheasant embroidered against clouds and buddhistic symbols. Some faults but attractive. 28.8 cms/11.5 inches wide. This type of badge, without waves, rocks or water, dates from the years immediately after the Reform movement of 1898, when the Guangxu emperor attempted to reform the government. The Dowager Empress CiXi had the emperor placed under detention and ordered the execution of the reform-minded officials who had aided him in this enterprise. These badges were thus produced for only a short period and consequently are comparitively scarce, particularly as pairs. A single badge of similar style is in the Yale University Art Gallery, the gift of Schulyer V. R. Cammann (#1992.77.37).
